9 Best Things To Do In Valsugana

Located in the south east of the Trentino region of Italy, Valsugana (Sugana Valley) is a beautiful area with lots to see and do.

Famous for being a popular ski resort during the winter months, it is also home to some stunning scenery and the largest lake that sits fully in Trentino.

If you visit during the warmer weather the lake offers a huge variety of different water activities to enjoy. Along with pretty beach and picnic spots to sit and relax.

In addition, there are some great treks with spectacular views, as well as enchanting medieval castles and rustic hamlets to explore.

So here are 9 amazing things to do in Valsugana!

1. Lago Di Caldonazzo

An incredibly sized lake, with plenty to do for visitors of any age! Making it top of the things to do in Valsugana list!

Spanning 5 km in length and 1.87 km in width, Lago Di Caldonazzo is the largest of the lakes in Trentino.

Many people think of Lake Garda as the largest, however Garda does not entirely belong to the Trentino region!

With plenty of activities on offer, such as canoeing, sailing, wind surfing, water skiing, diving, swimming, rowing and camping, there’s something for all the family!

You will also find plenty of free beaches and play areas, so if you’re not so keen on the water sports, a day of swimming and relaxing is also easy to come by.

In addition, if you fancy a walk, there are plenty of routes available which you can check out via Komoot website.

2. Trek Cima Vezzena (Pizzo Di Levico)

Cima Vezzena, aka Pizzo Di Levico, is the number one spot to see the stunning views of Valsugana Valley and more, from 1908m.

The trek is an easy, flat gravel trail leading up to the peak. Towards the start of the trek, you pass through some shaded forest. However, after this you will be directly beneath the sun so don’t forget your sunscreen!

Shortly before you reach the top the remains of a former fortress, Forte Cima Vezzena, will come into view, which is unaided bonus on your trek.

It takes roughly 1.5 hours to reach the peak but the amazing panoramic views are totally worth it!

So if trekking is your passion, then this must be added to your things to do in Valsugana list.

3. Arte Sella

Inspiring artwork created through the use of nature, displayed in its natural habitat!

Arte Sella is an international exhibition of contemporary art, born in 1986, which takes place in open air fields, in the woods of Val di Sella.

The artworks on display are mostly 3D designs, made by artists flown in from around the world. Many of the artists do not charge for their time as they feel it is a privilege to showcase their work on the Arte Sella grounds!

The majority of work on display is made from rocks, leaves, branches or trunks. Therefore you rarely come across anything made of artificial objects, materials or colours.

Also when the exhibition closes, many of the artworks are left in the woods, where they can take part in the life-cycle. While others are placed into museums, art galleries or show rooms in Italy or abroad.

This unique exhibition is well worth a visit if you are in Valsugana.

4. Paragliding

If you’re looking for something to fuel your inner adrenaline junky, this is it!

We hurled ourselves from Vetriolo Terme, at 1500m, with the awesome team at Fly Tandem Valsugana.

Manuel and Luca truly looked after us and made us feeling right at home, even though we couldn’t have been further from our beds!

Soaring above the trees of Valsugana, with incredible views of the turquoise lakes below, will be a morning we’ll remember for a long time.

If you are thinking about trying paragliding this breathtaking area is certainly the place to do it!

5. Visit A Malga

A ‘malga’ is a small structure which was used as a shelter for shepherds during summer months in the Alps. As well as being used for making milk and producing yoghurt, cheese, and other sorts of dairy produce.

Nowadays however, the farmers are keeping their traditional roots, but opening up to the public. Most malga’s you will find in Trentino will be serving up fresh cheese and breads made on site.

Our favourite malga in the Valsugana region was Malga Cima Verle, which can be found at the foot of Cima Vezzena.

It not only gives a great view of the mountains, and has plenty of sun loungers out in the fields, but at Malga Cima Verle they serve up some of the most delicious platters we tasted!

6. Sailing

We spent an afternoon down at Lago Di Caldonazzo trying our hand at sailing with the amazing guys at Archè.

Not only are they great with people of all levels and abilities, but they are also doing great things for the people of Caldonazzo who have disabilities and still want to sail. This young group of sailors really deserve a mention on our top things to do in Valsugana blog!

Sailing prices

3 hours afternoon – Euro 45.00 per person (up to 2 people)

Group day promotions for 3 people – Euro 30.00 per person

5-day course – Euro 150.00 per person

These costs include: sailing assistant/instructor, vehicles and equipment (boats, buoyancy aids, dry top etc.), use of the facilities (bathrooms, showers, etc.) and 3 hours of activity.

The friendly and professional instructors, along with the beautiful surroundings made this a great afternoon activity.

7. Castel Pergine

Castel Pergine was built in the 13th century and owned by the Counts of Austria for quite some time.

With it being positioned high up on the hill, it was used for guarding the Valsugana valley and the surrounding areas, such as Lago Di Caldonazzo.

It wasn’t until 1521, that the castle was passed on to the Prince Bishops of Trento.

Then in 1900 it was bought by a German enterprise, who decided to completely renovate Castel Pergine and turn it into a hotel and restaurant.

With 20 rooms available, it also has a garden, bar, shared lounge, free WiFi, as well as a beautiful sun terrace.

Staying in this medieval castle is definitely one of the most unique things to do in Valsugana.

8. Lago Di Levico

Lago Di Levico is the ideal spot for an afternoon of relaxing with a picnic!

With tourists often comparing Lago Di Levico to a Norwegian fiord, it’s a peaceful haven amongst the pines that you won’t want to miss in Valsugana.

In summer there’s plenty to do at Lago Di Levico including canoeing, swimming, sailing, windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding or renting electric boats.

There are also plenty of trails to enjoy with the most popular being the Fishermen’s Road, which circles around the whole lake – 8.5 km in total.

And come winter, Christmas markets are set up in the Habsburg Park, plus there are a few sports that can be practiced on the snow.

9. Relax At Camping Spiaggia

Camping at Lago Di Caldonazzo is one of the most popular things for locals and tourists to do.

With plenty of Lago Di Caldonazzo camping spots located on the south shore, waking-up right in the heart of Valsugana, just metres from the lake, is on most peoples to-do lists.

However, we opted to head over to Camping Spiaggia for the day and take full advantage of their jacuzzi and wellness centre!

With prices from €6 per adult and €9.50 for a standard pitch, camping may well be worth your while. Otherwise access to the wellness centre alone is open to the public at €20 per person/per day.

Definitely one of the more relaxing things to do in Valsugana. And a great way to end your trip!
