7 Best Things To Do In San Martino Di Castrozza

San Martino is lays in the heart of the Dolomites. With insane views, treks and lakes, here are our best things to do in San Martino Di Castrozza.

1. Trek Cima Rosetta

Cima Rosetta is one of the peaks that make up the Pale Di San Martino group of mountains. And this group is one of the 15 ranges that make up the Dolomites.

Cima Rosetta is easily accessible in the summer and is not only popular among trekking enthusiasts, but also children and family of all ages too. The path leading up to the peak is rocky and a little curvy. However you can take a two cable lifts up to the 2700m point.

The peak itself stands at 2743m high, so not too much of a climb but a rewarding view!

2. Laghi Di Colbricon

Laghi Di Colbricon, or the ‘Lakes of Colbricon’ as it translates, are located in the Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Natural Park.

You must walk a little to reach the lakes, and the best starting point is Malga Rolle, just outside of Passo Rolle. There is plenty of free parking, and from here you simply follow the signposts.

The lakes are not swimmable, however the views are incredible. With mountainous backdrops, much like most of San Martino Di Castrozza, Laghi Di Colbricon really is a photographers dream!

3. Take A Cooking Class

One of the best experiences and top recommended things to do in San Martino Di Castrozza!

We spent one afternoon at Chalet Prà Delle Nasse, with a real Italian chef, learning the true way of cooking pasta and desserts.

Located within walking distance of San Martino Di Castrozza town, it was an afternoon of fun, with a little bit of mess, as we cooked up a storm in the kitchen!

Also a hotel and restaurant, simply give the guys at Chalet Prà Delle Nasse a call to arrange a similar experience.

4. Lago Welsperg

Not the largest, but definitely one of the prettiest lakes in Trentino.

Lago Welsperg, or Lake Welsperg, is a beautiful spot located just outside of San Martino Di Castrozza.

The parameters of the lake can be circled on foot in less than 10 minutes. However you may want to spend a little more time there.

Surrounded by incredible scenery, from forests to the Pale di San Martino peaks, all of the the backdrops reflect on the water. Making for incredible photo opportunities depending on the season.

5. Visit A Malga

A ‘malga’ is a small structure which was used as a shelter for shepherds during summer months in the Alps. And also used for making milk and producing yoghurt, cheese, and other sorts of dairy.

Nowadays however, the farmers are keeping their traditional roots, but opening up to the public. Most malga’s you will find in Trentino will be serving up fresh cheese and breads made on site.

Our favourite malga in the San Martino region was Malga Venegia, which can be found in the Val Venegia valley, surrounded by forest.

It not only gives a great view of the mountains, but at Malga Venegia they serve up some of the most delicious home made food Italian foods!

6. Explore Mezzano

Mezzano is a small town located around 25 minutes by car from San Martino Di Castrozza.

With only approximately only 1700 inhabitants, it’s characterised by its rural past.

Although tourism isn’t as high as neighbouring towns and cities, Mezzano was one of the cutest little places we visited on our trip.

A traditional Italian town with a wooden twist, we spent the afternoon walking around following a map of all the local artwork. With wood worked into buildings and houses, it was an impressive display and each creative piece has a story to tell.

7. Walk Through Val Venegia

Val Venegia is a beautiful park, giving some of the best views of the mountains in the area.

We spent one afternoon walking from Malga Venegia to Malga Venegiota di Tonadico, which took around 20 minutes to cover the 1.8km distance.

Given their accessibility, the Alpine farmhouses Venegia and Venegiota have become a popular destination for hikers in the area. With a stream running parallel to the pathway almost all the way in between, why not take a walk through the mountains to remember.

And of course stop for some delicious food at the beginning and the end!
