Lago Welsperg is not the largest, but definitely one of the prettiest lakes in Trentino. With insane mountain reflections, here’s all the info for visiting.
How To Get To Lago Welsperg
Lago Welsperg is located in Val Canali, one of the most stunning valleys in the Alps.
Just a 30 minute drive from San Martino Di Castrozza town, the lake is not the largest, but definitely one of the prettiest we saw in Trentino.
For those staying in San Martino Di Castrozza the best option for public transport is to catch the B514 bus to Ponte Mirabello, then the B503 to Val Canali. The bus will stop directly outside Lago Welsperg at STOP: 5150.
However, we recommend renting a car for your entire Italy trip. That way you can pick up the car from the airport and explore the region at ease. Another option is of course a private taxi to Lago Welsperg.

Best Time To Visit Lago Welsperg + Tips
The warmest and driest time of year to really enjoy the lake and scenery is during the summer months of July and August.
With average daily temperatures at a pleasant 20°C, it’s perfect for walking, picnicking and generally enjoying the beautiful scenery.
However, during the autumn, the changing colours of the scenery are also said to be beautiful and worth seeing.
What To Pack
What To Expect At Lago Welsperg
A cute little lake with insane reflections and mountain backdrops.
Lago Welsperg, or Lake Welsperg, is a beautiful spot located just outside of San Martino Di Castrozza.
The parameters of the lake can be circled on foot in less than 10 minutes. However you may want to spend a little more time there.
Surrounded by incredible scenery, from forests to the Pale di San Martino peaks, all of the the backdrops reflect on the water. Making for incredible photo opportunities depending on the season.
One thing to note though, is that Lago Welsperg is not a natural lake.
The lords of the area (the Welsperg’s) wanted to enhance the grounds around their Villa, built in the nineteenth century as a hunting lodge.
Now this turquoise coloured gem plays host to many locals and tourists throughout the year. Regarded by most locals as one of the hidden things to do in San Martino Di Castrozza.

All The Blues
Many children in the area also visit Lago Welsperg for school trips.
There is a story that fantasy-like creatures used to live in the lake and that these creatures, with long hair and sparkly dresses, can still be seen from time to time charming the guests that visit.
At the entrance, there’s also a small traditional cafe.
Here you can take the equivalent of an english high tea. With an arrangement of locally produced cakes and baked goods on offer, it’s the perfect way to end your day!
Overall we rate Lago Welsperg as one of the best lakes in Trentino, so for those staying in the San Martino area it’s definitely worth a trip!
