We managed to explore quite a large area of this medieval capital, therefore got to see the all best Tallinn viewpoints. Here are the top 3!
1. Kohtuotsa Viewing Platform
Kohtuotsa Viewing Platform is located on the Northern side of Toompea Hill and was our favourite of the Tallinn viewpoints.
Once you’ve ventured through the narrow, cobblestone streets, you are rewarded with an incredible view from the top. However, the view is not the only thing that attracts people to this viewpoint. There is a pastel pink wall beside the landscape with a catchy quote ‘the times we had’.
It was a really cool place to hang out and watch the hustle and bustle of the streets below.
This, along with Patkuli viewing platform seem to be the two most popular places to see Tallinn from above.
2. Patkuli Viewing Platform
Patkuli viewing platform is located in one of the most ancient parts of the city and was our second favourite of the three Tallinn viewpoints. To get to the top there is a stairway of 157 steps connecting Toompea to the town below.
You can see the split personality of Tallinn’s old and new buildings from this special area. The epic view presents you with Tallinn’s signature red roofs as well as the highrise buildings in the new part of the city.
The ocean you see in the backdrop is the Gulf of Finland, then the port and the Pirita district.
The best part about these Tallinn viewpoints is, no matter what the weather, you are guaranteed unforgettable views all year round.
3. Danish King Garden
This seems to be more of an interesting place rather than one of the Tallinn viewpoints.
It’s located near Toompea Hill, not so far from Kohtuotsa viewing platform, and faces St. Nicholas Church. It feels more secret, rather than an open viewpoint, but be sure to get a picture with the monk and the famous red roofs in the backdrop.
This is supposedly the spot where a flag descended from the sky during Danish invasion, hence the name. Although today the garden remains a place where locals honour the role Denmark played in Estonia’s history.
In the garden there are three tall monks in black cloaks that light up inside at night time. Pretty creepy!

The apartment is located on the ground floor and comes with 1 bedroom, a flat-screen TV and a fully equipped kitchen that provides guests with a microwave, a fridge, a washing machine, an oven and a stovetop.
Budget – Red Emperor Hostel
Located in Tallinn’s beautiful Old Town and 550 yards from the Town Hall Square, Red Emperor Hostel offers accommodation with free Wi-Fi and 24-hour front desk.
Free luggage storage is available.
The rooms at Red Emperor are colourful and feature wooden furniture and views of the city.
Shared bathroom facilities are in the corridor.
The hostel comes with a common lounge, guest computers, a shared kitchen bar with draught beers and giant Jenga game, pool table and other entertainment.
