Secret Beach In Mirissa – A Complete Guide

Sri Lanka has many beautiful beaches but Secret Beach Mirissa is very unique. It’s an adventure to get there and it represents a whole vibe of it’s own.

How To Get To Secret Beach Mirissa

The journey to Secret Beach Mirissa is not a simple and easy trail.

The steep 2.1km walk takes around 30 minutes from the main beach in Mirissa, and if you are walking, it’s best to leave before the peak heat of the day. It can be tough walking uphill in the sun.

Another option is to hire a moped, or take a tuk tuk.

You can rent scooters around the South coast of Sri Lanka for roughly 1000 LKR per day.

If you are renting your own scooter, make sure you are careful on the ride. It only takes around 10 minutes to get there, but the road is not well maintained and filled with pot holes.

Also, as it is steep, your moped may struggle to get up the hill.

If you’re not confident on two wheels, we recommend bartering with a tuk tuk.

For those short on time, or that prefer everything to be organised for them, there are some awesome tours on Get Your Guide available to book in advance.

Best Time To Visit + Tips

We recommend visiting Secret Beach Mirissa early in the morning to avoid having to trek up there in the heat.

It’s a popular spot for sunset too. As the sun goes down, people grab their spots and slurp a refreshing beer on the pristine sand.

It’s also good to know that Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons, a North East monsoon (between October and January) as well as a South West monsoon, (between May and July).

The best times to visit for calmer oceans and stable weather is between January to April and Mid July to September, this applies for the whole country.

However, February to September is calm and dry too, but only in the North and East.

What To Expect At Secret Beach Mirissa

Secret Beach Mirissa is a cute bay tucked away on the southern coastline of Sri Lanka.

After the adventure up and down to this unique spot, you’ll be ready to buy a drink or bite to eat from the bar or restaurant located there.

You can also grab a fresh coconut or cold drink at a little stall on your way down to the beach.

The bar and restaurant is perched underneath the trees in the shade and around the edges are some cute swings with a full panoramic view of the beach. There are toilets at the side of the restaurant too.

Although it’s not so secret anymore, it does feel special compared to all the other beaches in Mirissa. It’s an adventure to get there and it represents a whole vibe of it’s own.

Things to know

When you arrive at Secret Beach Mirissa, you actually walk through the restaurant to get to the beach. There is a little lagoon straight ahead, which is the safest place for swimming.

If you are a strong swimmer, you can swim past the rocks, all depending on how rough the ocean is.

Turtles also seem to hang around in this part of the coast so keep your eyes peeled if you go snorkelling in the area.

There is no entrance fee to the beach but snorkel sets and sun loungers are available for a small fee.

It’s also good to know, that the tide comes in quickly so make sure your belongings don’t get soaked if a big wave decides to crash further up the shore than you expect.

Some may say this is the best beach in Sri Lanka!
