Neergarh Waterfall In Rishikesh – A Complete Guide

Neergarh Waterfall in Rishikesh is a popular tourist spot. With stunning landscapes on a shaded trail, here’s all the info for visiting.

How To Get To Neergarh Waterfall

Neergarh Waterfall is located deep in the green forrestry of Rishikesh, around 5km from the city centre.

There are two options to reach Neergarh Waterfall.

On Foot

The trek from Rishikesh town to Neergarh Waterfall is approximately 5km, and will take roughly 1 hour to reach the falls.

Most visitors tend to start trekking from the famous Laxman Jhula Bridge.

It’s a fairly straight forward, pathed, uphill road, before reaching the entrance and following the forrest trail for the final 20 minutes of the trek.

The majority of the trek runs on flat road parallel to the river, however there is a slight gradient of 200m overall.

Taxi/Tuk Tuk

Another option is to hire a driver.

We recommend negotiating a price for a taxi or tuk tuk to drop you at Sitab Negi’s Cafeteria (close to the start point of the forrest trail) and wait for a couple of hours before you return.

From the starting point, it’s just a 20 minute trek (1km) through the forrest to reach the first of the two falls.

For those short on time, or that prefer everything to be organised for them, there are some awesome tours on Get Your Guide available to book in advance.

Best Time To Visit Neergarh Waterfall

The best time to visit Neergarh Waterfall is post monsoon from October to mid November, as you will witness the waterfall in its best possible form.

We also recommend visiting Neergarh Waterfall as early in the morning as possible, to beat the crowds and avoid the peak heat of the day.

You should certainly avoid the monsoon season, which runs from May to September. The heavy rains can result in landslides and the strong storms will make your outdoor tours extremely difficult.

The months from October to February are the winter months, and the hilly town expects to receive snow in the extremely cold temperatures, so you can plan your trip in between early October to mid November.

What To Expect At Neergarh Waterfall

Hidden inside the woods of the beautiful hill town Rishikesh, Neergarh Waterfall is a real beauty to witness.

Rishikesh might be known for being the yoga capital of the world, but a hike to the nearby Neergarh Waterfalls is a great option for those looking to explore the nature side of the region.

I mean it doesn’t exactly compare to the waterfalls in Bali, however this kind of nature is rare to find in India!

Neergarh Waterfall is a two tier waterfall with two bathing pools that are only accessible by trek.

You can either trek the full 5km from Laxman Bridge in Rishikesh town, or hire a driver to drop you at the entrance point to the falls and trek the remaining 1km through the forrest.

The trekking to the falls is an adventurous activity as it involves walking through the jungle on narrow trails.

The first of the two falls you’ll reach is a small waterfall, just 1km from the road, where visitors can dip their toes in the pool and cool off.

The second of the falls is the main Neergarh Waterfall, and is a further 2km trek. This has a large pool with a bridge running over it, for people to hang out and take a dip.

The waterfall itself is quite small. However, any waterfall on the India itinerary is an absolute delight!

The Surroundings

The crystal blue colours are a joy to the eye, although be prepared if you’re looking to swim, as Neergarh Waterfall is loaded with a chill all year round.

So much so, that it takes your breath away when you dunk yourself in. That’s not to say it’s not unbelievably refreshing though.

The pools are only shallow so please be careful. Don’t go diving or jumping in from the edges. Plus be sure to take your camera as it really is a great spot for photos.

Butterflies of different species are seen fluttering around the wild flowers, adding beauty to this wonderful spot. There’s also a rich variety of flowers and trees for the real nature lovers.

Water, soft drinks, noodles and tea are available at Neergarh Waterfall from a small tin shack across the bridge.

The trek through the misty forests really sets the scene, and makes the adventure all the more worthwhile.

Overall, we had a great day visiting Neergarh Waterfall in Rishikesh and it was one of our highlights in Northern India. Actually, it’s possibly one of the best things to do in India.
