Lago Di Tovel is one of the most incredible places we’ve ever visited and completely took our breath away. Here’s all you need to know when visiting.
How To Get To Lago Di Tovel
Many hotels in the area of Val Di Non have bus transfers available.
However, we highly recommend renting a car. This way, you will arrive at the lake before anyone else and have it all to yourself.
Our trip to Lago Di Tovel was even more special because nobody else was there.
If you rent a car for your entire trip in Italy, you can pick the car up from the airport in which you land and drive from there into Trentino. Another option is of course a private taxi to the lake.
For those short on time, or that prefer everything to be organised for them, there are some awesome tours on Get Your Guide available to book in advance.
Lago Di Tovel Entrance Fee
It s free to visit.

What To Pack
Lago Di Tovel History
Lago Di Tovel is a stunning lake, situated in the Brenta Dolomites in Trentino, Italy.
It sits at a height of 1178m metres, is 0.38 square km and is regarded as one of the best things to do in Val Di Non.
This miracle of nature was formed by a landslide, 1300 years ago.
The lake is in the depth of the enchanted forests with the stunning Brenta Dolomites as a backdrop, so you can only imagine how incredible it is.
We visited Lago Di Tovel in the autumn which is actually when the lake is at its prettiest. The orange and burgundy shades of trees against the emerald green lake really makes the perfect picture.
This lake first became famous for its bright red colour. However, it’s not red anymore!

Why Was Lago Di Tovel Red?
We were told when we visited that there used to be cows grazing around the lake, so the mix of their manure with the a certain algae would turn the whole thing bright red.
However, those animals were taken away and the lake has since retained its wonderful emerald green colour.
This fact kind of killed-off many other stories as to why this mysterious lake was a bright blood-red colour. However, it does seem that the old rumours continue to circulate!

What To Expect At Lago Di Tovel
There’s a trail that leads all the way around the Lago Di Tovel where you can find many different beautiful angles and unusual, piercing colours.
It’s around a 45 minute walk in total and is one of the best lakes in Trentino for its scenery!
There are also many other hiking trails in the valley that leave from Lago Di Tovel. So if you’re in the mood to walk more, you have a few options to choose from.
If you don’t fancy walking, you can find a spot directly opposite the entrance at the naturally formed beach.
Alternatively, on a sunny day, you can pack-up a picnic, choose your spot, sit back and admire the incredible view of the Dolomites.

There are two famous hotels within the same grounds, which are located right next to the carpark by the entrance to the lake.
They both have restaurants where you can grab a coffee or a bite to eat once you’ve finished taking in the spectacular views at Lago Di Tovel.
One is more accessible than the other but they both have their very own prime spots at the lake front.
