Ella Rock Hike In Sri Lanka – A Complete Guide

The Ella Rock Hike in Sri Lanka is a well known spot, with breathtaking views. So here’s a complete guide to visiting, including how and when to get there.

How To Get To Ella Rock

Ella Rock is located in Ella, a town high in the mountainous region of Sri Lanka.

Standing at an elevation of 1,041 metres above sea level, Ella Town is located right in the centre of the island, and you can start the Ella Rock hike directly from the main high street.

There’s no need to book any transportation to the starting point.

We followed google maps when walking through town, which led us to the train track. The train track will then lead you directly to the sign posted starting point of the Ella Rock hike.

During the hike, if you get stuck along the way there are always other tourists on the same trail and many locals that are very friendly and more than willing to help.

For those short on time, or that prefer everything to be organised for them, there are some awesome tours on Get Your Guide available to book in advance.

There’s the popular 2-Day Tour of 3 Iconic Ella Sites available, which includes Ella Rock, Little Adam’s Peak, and the Nine Arch Bridge.

Ella Rock Entrance Fee

It’s free to visit Ella Rock.

If you don’t feel comfortable taking part in the Ella Rock hike alone, you can always pay for a local guide to show you the way as part of the Ella Rock Sunrise Hike.

Ella Rock Opening Times

Monday – Sunday: 9am – 7pm.

Best Time To Visit Ella Rock

The best time to visit the west and south coasts on your Sri Lanka itinerary is from December – March.

Many people choose to start the Ella Rock hike early in the morning, and we certainly recommend it.

Mainly for the reason that, although Ella is a lot cooler than the rest of Sri Lanka, it can still get pretty hot on the way up.

Also, if you leave too late in the day, the clouds will rise up quite high throughout the morning and it can obstruct the amazing view from top.

So when planning your Ella Rock hike, the earlier the better and don’t forget some energy snacks and water.

Remember that when walking along the train tracks that this is a working railway so lookout for trains.

Additionally, be aware that local touts may tell you that you are going the wrong to get you to employ them as a guide. Ignore them and follow your map and your gut instincts.

Finally, allow yourself time at the top to enjoy and soak up the incredible views.

What To Expect On The Ella Rock Hike

The Ella Rock Hike is a famous cliff located high above Ella village and 1041m (3415ft) above sea level.

We caught the famous Kandy to Ella train to make it into the small town before heading off exploring for the day.

At the top of Ella Rock you are rewarded with the most breathtaking, panoramic views. Sitting above the clouds, you can look out across the surrounding lush green hills and countryside.

The hike is around 8km, not overly strenuous and takes roughly a couple of hours. The gradient is quite steady, although there is a pretty steep path up to the very top of Ella Rock on the last stretch.

Hiking

To get to the start of the hike you have to walk along train tracks for a while. So make sure to look out for the Ella train which comes along here.

This train travels quite slowly and you should hear it coming. Just copy all the locals and step off the tracks onto the grass sidings until the train has passed.

After about 30 minutes of walking along the train tracks, you turn left to the official start of the Ella Rock hike. You now climb upwards through tea plantations as well as lush green countryside covered in tall grasses.

You then encounter a more rocky terrain, covered with trees that you climb up through. This is where you start to get some awesome views.

Keep climbing upwards and eventually you will come out of the trees onto a plateau. Here you will see a small hut and a Sri Lankan flag which means you have reached the top of Ella Rock!

Now just catch your breath, sit back and enjoy the spectacular views!
